About this Tool

Microsoft Teams is a tool that brings together many features of functions of Microsoft 365, Microsoft’s suite of workplace productivity tools. In Microsoft Teams, Indiana University students, faculty, staff, and external users can work together and share information in a common space (called a team).

The core communication and collaboration tools in Teams are focused around chat. You can send ad hoc direct chat messages to individuals or groups, or you can organize conversations around topics in a group digital space in Teams.

In addition to core chat and collaboration, Teams also includes video meeting and file storage features.

Key Features for Teaching and Learning

  • Organize conversations around different teams and channels. Create teams for different groups, and within each team, create channels to organize group conversations.
  • Send direct chat messages to one or more individuals. In addition to topical conversations in teams and channels, you can also directly message other users for quick ad hoc discussions.
  • Collaborate using other Microsoft 365 tools. Many other Microsoft 365 tools, such as Word, Onenote, Planner, and others are integrated into Teams.
